Few words about Indian Coast Guard

Indian Coast Guard is an organization of several missions performed by the actual operations of life at sea throughout the year. Despite being relatively small, it has a wide range of capabilities for both air and surface operations.

The organization is led by the General Manager of the Coast Guard India (DGICG) exercising its general command and oversight of the Coast Guard Headquarters (CGHQ) located in New Delhi. In the CGHQ, he is assisted by four deputy directors-general of the rank of Inspector General and other senior officials who head several staff divisions.

For effective control and surveillance, the maritime areas of India are divided into five Coast Guard regions, namely Northwest, West, East, Northeast and Andaman and Nicobar, with headquarters in Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Port Blair. The Coast Guard areas are under the command of the non-commissioned officers of the Inspector General.

The regions are divided into twelve “districts” of the Coast Guard, one for the nine coastal states on the mainland, two in the Andaman and Nicobar region, and one in Kavaratti on the Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands. Each Coast Guard District has one or more Coast Guard stations. In addition, there are Coast Guard Air Stations (CGAS) and Air Enclaves (CGAE) for air operations at several locations along the coast.

RECRUITMENT METHODS

The Coast Guard India is doing a recruitment campaign each year for recruiting young people like Navik in the general service field for which the minimum education degree is 10 + 2 with physics and math approved.

The selection procedure is as follows:

  • Merit List criteria will be based on a higher percentage of scores for a particular test center.
  • The percentage of qualified cutting (%) of a particular installation may increase if the number of requests is received at a higher percentage.
  • The written target rate exam, which typically covers topics such as mathematics, physics, basic chemistry, English knowledge at 12 std, general knowledge, current affairs, quantitative skills, and reasoning, etc.
  • Those who are eligible for the written exam will be subject to the PFT (Physical Fitness Test, PFT) and the test procedure will take about 2 days. Candidates with a physical disability are not eligible for this exam.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT):

PFT will be made for all those who qualify for the written tests. All candidates are recommended to have a sports platform (shoes, shirt, trousers, etc.). The PFT will consist of (i) running 1.6 km to complete in 7 minutes. (ii) 20 squats (Uthak Baithak) (iii) 10 Push up. Candidates who submit to PFT will do so at their own risk.

  • Candidates who qualify for the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) will only be required to undergo a first medical recruitment examination at the respective recruiting centers or at any other location decided by the Indian Coast Guard.
  • Based on the performance on the written examination, candidates will be pre-screened for initial (preliminary) medical screening in a proportion that may be decided by the Indian Coast Guard. The simple declaration of adjustment during the initial medical examination does not indicate the selection of the candidate for the final medical examination at INS Chilka.
  • The selection list will be prepared from the qualified candidates in all tests based on available vacancies. The judicious Zone Selection List will be posted on the Indian Coast Guard website www.joinindiancoastguard.gov.in in July 2018.

Candidates who write this exam have to clear an aptitude test. The test contains questions that check the logical application of a student. The test also checks the general awareness of the students. Once a candidate has passed the written test. The Candidates are then called for physical examination where they are medically examined for fitness. A candidate who completes the physical ability test with flying colors is then further selected for the final interview round.
