About Tripura University

The University of Tripura was established on October 2, 1987. The state’s first higher education institution, MBB College, began operating after 1947 with the affiliation of the University of Calcutta, but immediately after. of the partition, the population of the State has registered strong growth, as well as the number of students aspiring to higher education. The launch of MBB College was soon followed by the creation in 1950 of Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya in Kailasahar, the current seat of the Unokoti Tripura district. In 1964, Belonia College was opened in southern Tripura, followed three years later by the creation of Ram Thakur College in 1967 in Agartala. State students were paralyzed by a crucial fact: all schools had to ensure their affiliation with the University of Calcutta and there was no possibility of university training in Tripura.

In response to growing demands, the authority of Calcutta University agreed to organize courses in history, mathematics, and economics at MBB College, and in 1976 the University Grants Commission (UGC) recognized right as a third cycle. University of Calcutta (CUPGC). This has only intensified the state’s search for higher education and the demand for a separate university. However, it took another nine years to put in place measures to create the University of Tripura.
